Honoring & Remembering Jewish Contributions to our Nation's Defense
This program is produced and led by Dr. Karl Zeff, Retired Colonel US Army, and Rabbi Matt Friedman, Chaplain, California State Guard
Remembrance has long been a tradition within our community at the time of a Yahrzeit or during Yizkor. These moments provide us with a dependable time to reflect on the lives of people who were meaningful to us and whose memories are indelible. Similarly, as a nation, we have set aside Memorial Day to recall those who have died in service to our nation.
These are losses that reflect the totality of our nation, as these deaths impacted families of every faith, ethnicity, and socio-economic standing. Members of the Jewish community have served, and continue to serve with valor and at times in circumstances leading to death.
These painful losses are ones that continue to evoke emotive thoughts and feelings. Jewish traditions provide a consistent path to acknowledge these losses, and Memorial Day—uniting us as a nation—creates a time and place to grieve as a larger community.
I hope to see you there,
Chaplain (Rabbi) Matt Friedman, California State Guard
