From the Executive Director

May 2008

“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas”, says the famous slogan, unless you go to a Federation Executive Institute where directors of similar size federations gather to address, share and learn from our common current situations.

Common? Yes. Sometimes we think of Sacramento as an unusual community, but the fact is similar challenges cut across the nation; while campaigns continue to be stable and some even increase, over the past 20 years the number of donors to UJC dropped from 900,000 to 500,000 - almost 50%!  In some areas, the rate of intermarriage and un-affiliation is 80%!  And we think we have problems with anti-Semitism??!!

A Word From Our President

May 2008

Have you seen the banners?  Drive to midtown and you will see banners announcing Salute to Israel, the Jewish Federation’s annual celebration of Israel’s independence.  When I look up at the huge banners depicting both the Israeli and United States flags, I feel enormous pride.

This year we are celebrating Israel’s 60th birthday.  The Jewish State of Israel was established May 14, 1948.  With a population of 650,000, its residents consisted of strong pioneers who had already created villages, towns, social institutions, and thriving agricultural communities, as well as refugees from war-torn Europe who had risked their lives to come to their homeland.

Sderot Awareness Film

About this Video...

Sderot, is a town of 20,00 jews. Unfortunately, it has become part of their daily lives to be pounded by over 50 rockets a day. The sirens can go off at anytime, at school, in the park, during dinner. Residents have 15 seconds to seek shelter before the rockets hit. Where do you run? Where do you hide? Where is it safe? Some of these videos are from the past two weeks. Sderot, which is only 2 hours from Jerusalem is a regular city, with schools, malls, and restaurants.
